CPR & FIRST AID AT WORKPLACE
Introduction
What do you do if an employee collapsed with a heart attack? Do you have a skilled First Aider in your workplace? Each year companies and organizations are suffering from incidents resulting from disasters / emergencies at workplace. Some of such occurrences are “600 deaths”, “23 million lost working days”, “2 million people suffering from illness caused or aggravated by work stress”, “Financial losses of estimated RM15 billion” and etc.
Accidents and Emergencies can happen anywhere, at any place and at any time. Medical records show 95% of accidents and emergencies occur away from a medical facility. Prompt action by a bystander can save a life. Doing the right thing with the right techniques makes the difference between life and death. Have your staff been trained in CPR and Emergency First Aid.
The Occupational Safety & Health Act 1994 place a general duty on employers to ensure that adequate first aid provision is made for their employees if they are injured at work.
This means that the employer must provide, as a minimum, an appointed person at all times to take care of the emergency requirements at work. In low risk situations, an employer will need to arrange for a First Aider during normal working hours for each 20 employees.
